This implies the fund supervisor needs to settle on choice in a way that the benefit is amplified. Every other option, along these lines, is to be viewed with regards to whether it gives most extreme benefit. Benefit boost target offers ascend to various issues as beneath: I) Profit expansion idea ought to be considered comparable to dangers included. There is an immediate connection among hazard and benefit. Numerous unsafe recommendations return high benefit. Higher the hazard, higher is the chance of benefits. On the off chance that benefit boost is the main objective, at that point chance factor is by and large disregarded. I) Profit boost, as a target doesn't consider time example of return. Proposition A may give a higher measure of benefits contrasted with proposition B, yet on the off chance that the profits start to stream say 10 years after the fact, proposition B might be favored which may have lower by and large benefits yet the profits stream is all the more early and fa st. iii) Profit amplification, as a goal is excessively limited. It neglects to consider the social contemplations as likewise the commitments to different interests of laborers, purchasers, society just as moral exchange rehearses. Further, most business pioneers accept that selection of moral gauges fortify their serious positions. iv) Profits don't really bring about incomes accessible to the investor. Proprietors get income as either money profits paid to them or continues from selling their offers at a greater expense than paid at first. Current Approach The choice to benefit amplification is riches expansion. This is otherwise called Value amplification or Net Present Worth expansion. Worth is spoken to by the market cost of the companyââ¬â¢s value shares. Costs in the offer market at a given purpose of time, are the aftereffect of numerous variables like general monetary standpoint, specific viewpoint if the organizations viable, specialized factors and even mass brain science. Anyway taken on a drawn out premise, the offer market costs of a companyââ¬â¢s shares do mirror the worth, which the different gatherings put on an organization. Typically, the worth is an element of two variables (I) The presumable pace of income per portion of an organization (EPS) and (ii) The capitalization rate EPS are determined by isolating the periods all out income accessible for the firmââ¬â¢s normal offers by the quantity of portions of regular offers extraordinary. The feasible pace of income per share (EPS) relies upon the appraisal with regards to how beneficially an organization will work later on. The capitalisation rate mirrors the loving of the financial specialists for an organization. On the off chance that the organization gains a higher pace of winning per share through dangerous tasks or unsafe financing design, the speculators won't view its offers with favor. To that degree, the market estimation of the portions of such an organization will be low. In the event that an organization puts its store in unsafe endeavors, the financial specialists will place in their cash on the off chance that they get better yield when contrasted with that from an okay offer. The market estimation of a firm is an element of the winning per share and the capitalisation rate. Assume the Earning per share are relied upon to be Rs. 7 for an offer, and the capitalisation rate expected by the investor is 20 percent, the market estimation of the offer is probably going to be 7 x 100 = - = Rs. 5 20% 20 This is so on the grounds that at this value, the speculators have a procuring of 20%, something they anticipate from an organization with this level of hazard. The significant issues identifying with amplifying share costs are Economic Value Added (EVA) and the attention on partners. Financial Value Added (EVA) is a well known measure utilized by numerous organizations to decide if a speculation â⬠proposed or existing â⬠contribute decidedly to the ownerââ¬â¢s riches. EVA is determined by taking away, the expense of assets used to fund or venture from its after-charge activities benefits. Ventures with positive EVA increment investor esteem as those with negative EVA decrease investors esteem. For instance, the EVA of a speculation with after duty activities benefits of Rs. 510,000 and related financing expenses of Rs. 475,000 would be Rs. 35,000 (I. e. Rs. 410,000 â⬠375,000) Because this EVA is certain, the venture is relied upon to build proprietor riches and is along these lines adequate. Shouldn't something be said about Stakeholders? Partners are gathering, for example, representatives, clients, providers, loan bosses, proprietors and other people who have a direct financial connect to the firm. A firm with a partner concentrate intentionally dodges activities that would demonstrate hindering to partners. The objective isn't to augment partner prosperity however to save it. It is relied upon to give since quite a while ago show advantage to investors to keeping up positive partner connections. Such relationship ought to limit partner turnover, clashes and case. Obviously, the firm can more readily accomplish its objective of investor riches boost by keeping up collaboration with different partners instead of having strife with them. The Role of morals Ethics is norms of direct or good judgment. Today the business network when all is said in done and the money related network specifically are creating and upholding moral principles, design being to persuade business and market members to hold fast to both the letter and the soul of laws and guidelines worried about business and expert practice. A compelling morals program is accepted to upgrade corporate worth. A morals program can decrease potential suit and judgment costs, keep up a positive corporate picture, and fabricate investors certainty, and increase the steadfastness, duty and regard of the organizations partners. Such activities, by keeping up and improving income and decreasing apparent hazard, can emphatically influence the firmââ¬â¢s share costs. Moral conduct is in this way saw as important for accomplishing the firmââ¬â¢s objective of proprietor riches expansion. Spot of Finance work in the association structure: The money work is nearly the equivalent in many endeavors. The subtleties may contrast yet the significant highlights are general in nature. The account work possesses such a significant spot, that it can't be the sole obligation of the official. The significant parts of the fund work must be carried on by the top administration I. e. the Managing Director and the Board of Directors. It is the Board of Directors, which settles on all the material ultimate conclusions including money. Monetary administration from numerous points of view is a fundamental piece of the employments of directors who are engaged with arranging, allotment of assets and control. The duties regarding money related administration are arranged all through the association. For instance: â⬠¢ The architect, who proposes another plant, shapes the speculation arrangement of the firm. The advertising examiner gives contributions to the way toward determining and arranging. â⬠¢ The buy supervisor impacts the degree of interest in inventories. â⬠¢ The team lead has a state in the assurance of receivable approach. â⬠¢ Departmental administrators, as a rule, are significant connections in the budgetary control arrangement of the firm. The travel agency appears to have challenges with the employees and the HR department. There are no goals or structure for the employees to rely on, and no goals to achieve. There are six major functions of HR that are needed to be implementing in order for the change to begin in the Travel agency. According to Byars and Rue (2008) The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) has identified six major functions of human resource management: 1. Human resource planning, recruitment, and selection. 2. Human resource development. 3. Compensation and benefits. 4. Safety and health. 5. Employee and labor relations. 6. Human resource research. (Byars Rue, 2008). The HR department can start to outline a plan if HR, management and the employees all have clear communication and direction of what the HR department is for and how they assist the company and the employees. The challenges that the HR department will face is using, HRP (Human resource Planning), to align the companyââ¬â¢s overall strategic plan with the appropriate employees in place to achieve this goal. According to Byars and Rue (2008) Human resource planning (HRP), also referred to as workforce planning or personnel planning has been defined as the process of ââ¬Å"getting the right number of qualified people into the right job at the right time. HRP involves applying the basic planning process to the human resource needs of the organization. To be effective, any human resource plan must be derived from the strategic and operational plans of the organization. In essence, the success of HRP depends largely on how closely the human resource department can integrate effective people planning with the organizationââ¬â¢s business planning process. 5 Unfortunately, HRP is often inadequately tied to overall corporate planning. (Byars ; Rue, 2008). There are four statistical modeling techniques that can be used by the HR department to forecast the needs that the agency will need. The can use time-series analysis, personnel ratios, productivity ratios and the regression analysis. Another technique that can be used is benchmarking, ââ¬Å"benchmarking involves thoroughly examining internal practices and procedures and measuring them against the ways other successful organizations operate. ââ¬â¢ Byars and Rue (2008). In order to meet the Demands of the company and put a solid plan into place, a skills inventory should be completed to see what types of employees the company has and their skill sets to determine future training and advancement opportunities. A skills inventory consolidates information about the organizationââ¬â¢s human resources. It provides basic information on all employees, including, in its simplest form, a list of the names, certain characteristics, and skills of employees. Because the information from a skills inventory is used as input into promotion and transfer decisions, it should contain information about each employeeââ¬â¢s portfolio of skills, not just those relevant to the employeeââ¬â¢s current job. (Byars Rue, 2008). The next step will be metric for the HR department to gather data that can be used to show the senior management areas of improvement, or areas that need a deeper focus. These metrics can show where the company spends the most of their time and money along with, areas of the company or departments that do not meet the desired metric goals. Metrics can show productivity based on a set desired goal for the companies employees. Metrics refers to any set of quantitative measures to assess workforce performance. Examples of metrics that HR might use include such things as analysis of the cost per hire, average length of time to fill a position, training cost per employee, turnover cost per employee, and new-hire performance by recruiting strategy. Byars Rue, 2008). The reason that metrics are so important to the decision making of the senior staff is that they provide a starting point for the company to see where they need to start their focus for change. Being able to evaluate an employeeââ¬â¢s performance will help coach and mentor the employee. Metrics provide real numbers that can show areas were training is needed to get the employees to a desire d output or percentage goal. Communication of the desired results or a t new strategic plan can be tricky, especially to a skeptical bunch that has really had no definition or goals in place. They are going to want to know what is in it for them. Communication is the key to ensure understanding. The whys must be answered, why this necessary, why are we doing this what is in it for me. In order to communicate these new changes all of these must be answered. The goal is to let the employees to know what HR does and what will be changing, for instance career planning, development and training. This will be to ensure that all employees have or will have the knowledge and skills to perform to the level that the company wants their employees to be at. Letting the employees know that they are here to assist them in getting to where they want to be, while providing them an outline of career path and training to keep them interested. Where there is room for advancement there is room for recruiting new staff member with skills to help the company grow. When it comes to recruiting, there are several methods that can be used. Using internal sources at first, the organization will keep moral up as they seek already trained and qualified personnel. Another method is reaching outside the organization to bring in new talent with other perspectives and fresh ideas to bring to the team. ââ¬Å"Organizations have at their disposal a wide range of external sources for recruiting personnel. External recruiting is needed in organizations that are growing rapidly or have a large demand for technical, skilled, or managerial employees. â⬠(Byars Rue, 2008). The external sources bring all types of employees plus they bring a wider skill set to choose from. Other sources include using job boards, advertising, web sites, job placement agencies, employee referrals and walk- ins. When it comes to the selection process there are things that need to be looked at, what exactly is the company in need of, where do they want to go, where have past internal and external employees gone within the company. Use the metrics to see what has panned out in the past. In conclusion the travel agency has been lacking clear direction for future growth. In order to grow and to achieve success, the HR department and management need to determine how to incorporate the strategic plan and goals of the company into the HRP. The HRP will then create goals, training and structure for growth in the company by determining what the company has in terms of employees and their skills. By determining the skills of employees then HR and management can determine the new metrics based off of the old ones and by using the metrics they can determine what changes need to be made first. By determining where the company is lacking in production will the help senior management determine what types of employees are needed for future success. References Byars, L. L. , Rue, L. W. (2008). The MinisterS Black Vail As Art Essay Example For Students
The MinisterS Black Vail As Art Essay When an author (artist) can make his emotions, thoughts, ambitions, and inner self materialize, he has reached the dearest form of art, and the artwork can never mean as much to anyone as it does the one who created it. The artist does not own nor can he interpret completely due to the ever growing life-like attributes that the art/literature has adopted. Therefore, Hawthorne himself could not put into words an interpretation of The Ministers Black Vail because the story its self is an interpretation of something living inside the author, a feeling that can only be felt. In this literary figuration, portrait, there is not a moral. Nathanial Hawthorn used the whole story to create or incite a particular emotion, a type of picture that is like something else. In the ministers black veil Hawthorne creates a partial portrait of his own emotions and soul with the focus being on the pain that isolation, alienation, and loneliness brings to some one such as an artist. An argument can be made in a few different ways, but it is best to determine the possible validity of the argument by attempting to view the piece in its entirety, considering all facetted parts of the story. The intended idea was created in the story, the story was created by the man, and the man was created by society, these are all contributors to The Ministers Black Veil, possibly as much as the words. To consider the text, The Ministers Black Veil, without taking into account, the above stated, is to see the piece incompletely. One must consider the entirety of the story, unless one believes: A story is a story, is a story. As a precursor, the common understanding needs to be reached that: literature is an art, and has many mediums. We will write a custom essay on The MinisterS Black Vail As Art specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now Medium is the material or technique with which an artist works (Dictionary. om), for example: photographs, pastels, canvas, paper, ink, etc There are technical, recreational, and otherwise artistic uses for all mediums. A small child taking pictures of a puppy with a disposable camera, a reporter taking precise pictures of a sporting event, and an artist taking close-up pictures of the dew as it drips off a tree are all different uses of the same medium in photography. Literature can be created with many different intentions and reasons, but the attempt to determine that something is not art based off of the motivation or intentions of the artist is quit meaningless. Some argue that each literary work constitutes itself and its relation to reality through a master metaphor that is co-extensive with its own body (Allen 1). One can find a good common ground for understanding without being quite as brood and definitive. It would be safer to stay on the idea, for now for sure, of fictional literature being art. This is what The Ministers Black Veil is, art. One thing art is, is the representation of something else. The art itself does not represent its self, but something inside the artist. The Ministers Black Veil is abstract in that it is indirectly representing something within the author himself. What is inside the man that he would want the reader to see? What could the reader possibly experience and be able to relate to the author with, without even knowing it? Isolation and loneliness is what Nathanial Hawthorn wants a reader to feel when he reads The Ministers Black Veil. Two relevant components of hawthorns art are, multiple authorship and his expected audience. Hawthorne had to find a way to communicate his unconventional ideas to a very conventional society. .uc49d8bc4c1dc20f331e76c1004ae4b22 , .uc49d8bc4c1dc20f331e76c1004ae4b22 .postImageUrl , .uc49d8bc4c1dc20f331e76c1004ae4b22 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .uc49d8bc4c1dc20f331e76c1004ae4b22 , .uc49d8bc4c1dc20f331e76c1004ae4b22:hover , .uc49d8bc4c1dc20f331e76c1004ae4b22:visited , .uc49d8bc4c1dc20f331e76c1004ae4b22:active { border:0!important; } .uc49d8bc4c1dc20f331e76c1004ae4b22 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .uc49d8bc4c1dc20f331e76c1004ae4b22 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .uc49d8bc4c1dc20f331e76c1004ae4b22:active , .uc49d8bc4c1dc20f331e76c1004ae4b22:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .uc49d8bc4c1dc20f331e76c1004ae4b22 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .uc49d8bc4c1dc20f331e76c1004ae4b22 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .uc49d8bc4c1dc20f331e76c1004ae4b22 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .uc49d8bc4c1dc20f331e76c1004ae4b22 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .uc49d8bc4c1dc20f331e76c1004ae4b22:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .uc49d8bc4c1dc20f331e76c1004ae4b22 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .uc49d8bc4c1dc20f331e76c1004ae4b22 .uc49d8bc4c1dc20f331e76c1004ae4b22-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .uc49d8bc4c1dc20f331e76c1004ae4b22:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Art Review: Forgotten Fence by Carolyn Rosenberger EssayMany of his sketches seem to teeter between the two objectives of open expression and strategic rhetoric. Thomas R. More, in his book a Thick and Darksome Veil, determines from looking at the media in which he published and their reception to his literature that there was a writing down and therefore a satirized component to hawthorns literature, especially his sketches. More says that Hawthorne had to write both with, and against the contemporary parameters of taste (Moore, 29). This is most evident in The Ministers Black Veil with the footnote on the first page describing a similar event. A man, eighty years before, had done pretty much the same thing as the fictional character, Mr. Hooper (Mcmichael, 632). This is with contemporary taste in that it was a story that was known, so Hawthorne was able to use it to portray his feelings of loneliness. More believed, Hawthornes apparent stylistic simplicity is a veil, and that his outward adherence to Blairs rules for structure of sentences, masks a socially and culturally variant subtext (Moore, 30) The second main component of Hawthornes literary art is the authors behind the stories. Of multiple authorship, Peter Elbow wrote that always there are two authors from any text: the implied author as it were in the text and the actual historical author as it were behind the text (Moore 29). As far as Hawthorne is concerned, this is very true. The voice within used by Hawthorne varied a lot and sometimes there are compounded voices behind the sketches and stories (Moore 29). One might wonder what voice or part of Hawthorne is coming out in The Ministers Black Veil. Well, he experienced an enduring loneliness throughout his life according to many accounts of his life. One particular book focuses on just the alienation, and isolation of Hawthornes life, the Lasting Loneliness of Nathaniel Hawthorne by Henry G. Fairbanks. In this book, Fairbanks attempts to account for Hawthornes whole life from the angle of his loneliness. He describes the separation of a man from God, nature, other man, and self and ties Hawthornes life to all of these. While The Ministers black veil deals specifically with the isolation of an artist, Hawthorne experienced a reoccurring cycle of isolation throughout his early life, college, adulthood, and marriage (Fairbanks). He was fatherless and was raised by solitary women, and had trouble fitting in until he died (Fairbanks 3). Fairbanks quickly makes the connection of loneliness to Hawthornes literature when he writes: His awareness of loneliness was an obsession. The recurrence of isolation and insulation in his vocabulary almost constitute the trademark of his art (Fairbanks, 3). Hawthorne himself wrote to Longfellow: By some witchcraft or other -Ã for I really cannot assign any reasonably why and wherefore I have been carried away from the main current of life, and find it impossible to get back again. Since we last met, , ever since that time I have secluded myself from society; and yet I never meant any such thing or dreamed what sort of life I was going to lead (Fairbanks, 62). The minister in the story is very similar to an artist or genius or someone else with some type of power because a preacher obviously has certain level of power and responsibility for the congregation. They are found to be even more similar in that: for one to do a good job, or better job than one or someone else has done before, one must deviate from conventional action. In society, no matter what the outcome of a persons lifestyle, deviant behavior is discouraged and punishable by alienation, but is only admired and commended in hindsight or retrospect. It is the same with Mr. Hooper. Hawthorne makes it clear that the veil causes him to do his job better and causes him to be isolated at the same time. But his isolation does not come from the veil, directly, but it comes from the people because they will not accept the deviant behavior. They demand an explanation, and when they do not reactive one, they make him an outcast. .uc6b8820923464c0e56e974ea7d66d6e8 , .uc6b8820923464c0e56e974ea7d66d6e8 .postImageUrl , .uc6b8820923464c0e56e974ea7d66d6e8 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .uc6b8820923464c0e56e974ea7d66d6e8 , .uc6b8820923464c0e56e974ea7d66d6e8:hover , .uc6b8820923464c0e56e974ea7d66d6e8:visited , .uc6b8820923464c0e56e974ea7d66d6e8:active { border:0!important; } .uc6b8820923464c0e56e974ea7d66d6e8 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .uc6b8820923464c0e56e974ea7d66d6e8 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .uc6b8820923464c0e56e974ea7d66d6e8:active , .uc6b8820923464c0e56e974ea7d66d6e8:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .uc6b8820923464c0e56e974ea7d66d6e8 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .uc6b8820923464c0e56e974ea7d66d6e8 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .uc6b8820923464c0e56e974ea7d66d6e8 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .uc6b8820923464c0e56e974ea7d66d6e8 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .uc6b8820923464c0e56e974ea7d66d6e8:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .uc6b8820923464c0e56e974ea7d66d6e8 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .uc6b8820923464c0e56e974ea7d66d6e8 .uc6b8820923464c0e56e974ea7d66d6e8-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .uc6b8820923464c0e56e974ea7d66d6e8:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Photosynthesis EssayIt is exactly the same in reality. It is not the art that is the cause of the isolation of the artist, but it is the fault and working of the people who isolate him. So the context of the story suggests the abstract meaning of loneliness, as does the dialogue. Probably the most important scene to draw conclusions from is the last dialogue of Mr. Hooper, when he is dying. Why do you tremble at me alone? Tremble also at each other! Have men avoided me, and women shown no pity, and children screamed and fled, only for my black veil (Mcmichael, 640)? This last speech from Mr. Hooper seems to most critics, especially ones of adolescent awareness of the story, to be yet more evidence that the black veil is a literal symbol of hidden sins. Yet, this actually points to an alternative meaning. Here, the point is clearly not the lesson that everyone wears veils; he is instead trying to reason with them to get him to accept him. He is trying to make the point that his veil is no different than anyone else. The reason doesnt matter because everyone has veils, and not talking just about secret sins. Mr. Hooper is saying that everyone is different. Hawthorne is saying that everyone is different; everyone just lives, weather they follow the social norms or not. As the dialogue continues, it is more apparent what is meant by Hawthorne. When the friend shows his inmost heart to his friend; the lover to his best beloved; when man does not vainly shrink from the eye of his creator (Mcmichael, 640). Here, Hawthorne is driving the point home that everyone is someone else in order for people to accept them, saving their true selves for their dearest friends and lovers, but he had symbolically honestly true with everyone, and they shunned him for is. In the same way, he lived open as possible with his unconventional ideas, and was shunned for it Hawthorne could make his emotions, thoughts, ambitions, and his artwork can never mean as much to anyone as it does to him. He couldnt explain the story, because the story its self was an explanation.

Part D of Appendix C Essays Part D of Appendix C Essay Part D of Appendix C Essay The steps you took in the recording process How the steps you took support the principles of accounting The general goal of financial reporting is to be able to keep track of where your money goes. It also lets you know what your profits are and what expenses you have going out. This way you and your investors can see how the company is doing or it will let you know if youââ¬â¢re not making anything and need to get out before the company goes under too far.As for the steps that I took in the recording process, is I took a look at was coming in and going out. Here you want to make sure that everything is recorded correctly and under the proper headings. For example, say your investor gives you $25,00. 00 dollars to invest in your company; well here you would put account receivables as a debit. The reason for this is because it is an income or profit that you can use. Something else, you have account payable, this is where you put what you pay an employee and it goes under credit because you have to pay that expense out of the company pocket.Have to make sure that everything is recorded correctly just in case the company gets outdid. The steps that I took help the principle of accounting by showing everything. Making sure the correct dates were put down and for what goes with that. I also made sure that each input was put in the right category. This shows all the statements that are in financial accounting. The company has to have all four statements in order to be successful.

A Single Man (1964) by Christopher Isherwood
A Single Man (1964) by Christopher Isherwood Christopher Isherwoodââ¬â¢s A Single Man (1962) is not Isherwoodââ¬â¢s most popular or most lauded work, even after the recent Hollywood movie, starring Colin Firth Julianne Moore.à That this novel is one of the ââ¬Å"lesser readâ⬠of Isherwoodââ¬â¢s novels speaks volumes for his other works, because this novel is absolutely beautiful.à Edmund White, one of gay literatureââ¬â¢s most respected and prominent authors, called A Single Man ââ¬Å"one of the first and best models of the Gay Liberation movementâ⬠and itââ¬â¢s impossible to disagree. Isherwood himself said that this was the favorite of his nine novels, and any reader might imagine that it would be quite difficult to top this work in terms of emotional connectivity and social relevance.à George, the main character, is an English-born gay man, living and working as a literature professor in Southern California.à George is struggling to readjust to ââ¬Å"single lifeâ⬠after the death of his long-time partner, Jim.à George is brilliant but self-conscious. He is determined to see the best in his pupils, yet knows few, if any, of his students will amount to anything.à His friends look to him as a revolutionary and a philosopher, but George feels heââ¬â¢s simply an above-par teacher, a physically healthy but noticeably aging man with little prospects for love, though he seems to find it when determined not to look for it. The language flows beautifully, even poetically, without seeming self-indulgent. The structure ââ¬â like short bursts of thought ââ¬â is easy to keep pace with and seems to function almost in tune with Georgeââ¬â¢s day-to-day musings.à Whatââ¬â¢s for breakfast?à Whatââ¬â¢s happening on the way to work?à What am I saying to my students, but what do I hope theyââ¬â¢re hearing?à This is not to say that the book is an ââ¬Å"easy read.â⬠à In fact, it is emotionally and psychologically haunting.à Georgeââ¬â¢s love for his deceased partner, his loyalty to a broken friend, and his struggle to control lustful emotions for a student are effortlessly expressed by Isherwood, and the tension is brilliantly constructed.à There is a twist ending which, had it not been built with such ingenuity and genius, could read as something quite clichà ©.à Fortunately, Isherwood gets his point across without having to sacrifice his (or the readerââ¬â¢s) imme rsion into the plot line.à This was a balancing act pulled off immaculately ââ¬â truly impressive. One of the more disappointing elements of the book may be the result of the novelââ¬â¢s length.à Georgeââ¬â¢s simple, sad life is so ordinary but has so much promise; our understanding of this is largely due to Georgeââ¬â¢s internal monologue ââ¬â his analysis of every action and emotion (typically literary-inspired).à It is easy to imagine that many readers would enjoy getting more of the back story between George and Jim and more of the relationship (little as it existed) between George and his student, Kenny.à Some might be disappointed by Georgeââ¬â¢s kindness to Dorothy; indeed, readers have consistently expressed that they would not have been able, personally, to forgive such a transgression and betrayal. This is the only inconsistency in an otherwise wholly believable plot line, though, and will likely be subject to reader-response, so we can hardly call it an outright fault. The novel takes place in the course of one day, so the characterization is about as well-developed as it can be; the emotion of the novel, the desperation and sadness, are genuine and personal. The reader at times might feel exposed and even violated; sometimes frustrated and, at other times, quite hopeful.à Isherwood has an uncanny ability to direct the readerââ¬â¢s empathy so that she might see herself in George and thereby find herself to be disappointed in herself at times, proud of herself at other times. Ultimately, we all are left with the sense of knowing who George is and of accepting things as they are, and Isherwoodââ¬â¢s point seems to be that this awareness is the only way to live a truly satisfied, if not happy, life.

How does the quality of mentors reflect on student nurses grade on Essay
How does the quality of mentors reflect on student nurses grade on placement - Essay Example A mentee can even make the decision to work on an ability, during placement, that his or her mentor has identified as a personal strength even though the mentee may not completely believe this; thus improving his or her overall marketability. Research Question: How does the quality of Mentors reflect on nursing students grades on placement? Introduction In nursing, mentoring can be said to be a part of the ââ¬Ëhelping processââ¬â¢ that allows student nurses to benefit from the experience of the more practiced nurses. Mentoring allows the structural, insightful, and intentional learning which takes place in different stages. The mentor is expected to account for his or her own as well as the menteeââ¬â¢s experience. The professional student nurse mentor will help the student nurse to realize her potential and demonstrate how best to put theoretical issues into practice. The professional student nurse also plays a big part in determining their placements. They can establish le arning contracts for their mentees which help the student nurses to learn about how to participate in projects. Rationale Mentoring is the prime example of self-directed learning. It basically calls for a mentor and mentee to take responsibility for all the learning processes that are necessary (Carter, Hudyma, and Horrigan 2010). In most professions, including nursing, the recognized codes of ethics stress the tradition and professional requirement of passing to new learners the skills and abilities that they require in order to be competent. In a mentoring relationship between a student nurse and a certified medical practitioner is mutually defined and shared (Kenyon and Peckover 2008). Moreover, the mentorââ¬â¢s character plays an important part in influencing the student nurseââ¬â¢s selection of placement choice as well as future career. Through the study of the importance of mentorship qualities, mentors will be able to recognize the effect that their behaviors have on th eir mentees (Young and Curzio 2007). This study will also give suggestions on how mentors can alter their approaches towards student nurses so as to avail intervention strategies that will help the mentees to make more informed decisions in future. For many students to benefit the most from mentoring relationships, mentors must be able to understand when they do not make the best decisions for the situations they are in (Harwood, Reimer-Kirkham, Sawatzky, Terblanche, and Van Hofwegen 2009). They must also be able to recognize what other options they have in terms of their dealing with difficult situations, and the effects that will materialize in mentees if their behavior impacts on student nurses in a negative way (Sedgwick and Yonge 2009). Background Research studies conducted by specialists have shown that mentors play a significant role in the lives of student nurses. In addition, the individual qualities of the mentor can greatly affect how a student nurse responds to his or he r placement. For example, mentors who hold the view that supervising a student nurseââ¬â¢s placement is a privilege for them tend to have more influence on their mentees (Jokelainen, Jamookeeah, Tossavainen and Turunen, 2013). Understanding mentors will also seek to make sure that their student nurses acquire the required clinical skills that are required

Longitudinal Strategic Development Study Virgin Essay
Longitudinal Strategic Development Study Virgin - Essay Example In order to understand the strategic development history of Virgin, it would be necessary to refer to the context of strategy, as a key criterion for the success of business operations. In accordance with Waters (2006) the term corporate strategy ââ¬Ëcontains all the strategic decisions that affect the whole diversified corporationââ¬â¢ . In the above context, corporate strategy refers to a series of organizational problems, such as the following ones: a) which part/ sector of the organization is of more importance for the organizationââ¬â¢s growth, b) at what level integration should become one of the organizationââ¬â¢s activities, c) how the growth of the organization can be secured ââ¬â especially in the long term, d) in which way the organizationââ¬â¢s mission could be achieved, e) how the strategies of the organizationââ¬â¢s different sectors can be combined so that organizational culture is secured, and so on. In other words, the corporate strategic history shows the methods used by the organization for promoting its culture and achieving its goals; these methods can be differentiated across organizations ââ¬â in accordance with the conditions in the internal and external environment but also the aims and the values of each organization. Proof For The Existence Of God Philosophy Essay
Proof For The Existence Of God Philosophy Essay Opinions relatingà in favor of and in opposition to theà existence of Godà have been controversial from many years as anticipated by philosophers, theologians, scientists, and others. The discussion with reference to the existence of God is very traditional and most argued debates inà human history. The existence of God is a matter of debate in philosophy,à theà philosophy of religion, andà popular culture. This report presents the different sides and opinions of philosophers that at different time periods argued about the existence of God and its need as well as the analysis of different views to present the controversial topic in detail. Definition of God In contemporary Western culture, the perception of God normally relates to aà monotheistic, superlative, eventual, and personal being. This view is mostly originated from Christian and Hebrew traditions.à Traditional viewà portrayed God as having perfection in almost everything. Many religions and different societies believe that God is a body that cannot be defined. They alleged that this act can deny the magnificent nature of God. Some traditional philosophical approaches defined God as the prime mover or the uncaused cause, the ultimate creator, or a being that than which nothing greater can be conceived. (Steve Rudd, 2012) Arguments for the existence of God Aquinas Five Ways argued that the God exists and its necessary to prove this controversy. The summarized points from that literature are discussed below: Theà argument relating unmoved moverà emphasized that, we experience motion in the universe from where we assume that there exists an initial mover. Aquinas predicted that the motion is created because of an unmoved object; therefore there must be an unmoved mover. Aquinasà another view discussed that from first causeà foundation it is impracticable for an organism to create itself. Therefore, it predicts that there must be a first cause that is itself uncaused. The argument fromà necessary beingà declares that all organisms areà conditional which means that they also have choice of non existence. Aquinas therefore sets his point that if everything chooses not to exist, then we may not have anything in the universe. But as things exist now, there must exist a being regarded as God withà necessary existence. Aquinasà argued from degree of goodness that there are always things that are good or bed from others. He believed that there must be a maximum goodness which causes all goodness. Theà teleological argumentà asserts the view that unintelligent things are ordered to be in position. Aquinas concentrates on the view that unintelligent objects can only be ordered by an intelligent being, which proves that there must be an intelligent being God to move objects to specific purpose. (Theodore Gracyk, 2004) The ontological argument was presented by philosophers includingà St. Anselmà andà Renà © Descartes. The argument puts forward that the existence of God is obvious and self-evident. The formulation of logic they proposed is presented below: God is the greatest conceivable being. It is greater to exist than not to exist. Therefore, God exists. (Oppy and Graham, 1996 revised in 2011) Different philosophers argued that the existence of God in not necessary because there is no proof that if something is predictive or superlative it also exists. The debate was controversial and is also in modern time builds up the arguments to conclude that either God exist or not and if its existence is necessary. Arguments from historical events or personages Christianityà andà Judaismà believe that God interfered and shows his existence in almost every specific event and situations in history. Those events and the interference proved that there is empirical evidence that God exists. For example the event of Exodusà and the giving of theà Ten Commandmentsà in front of all the tribes of Israel. The Resurrection of Jesus argues that there is adequate historical confirmation for resurrection of Jesus to support his asserts to be the son of God which proved the Gods existence.à This argument stem from theà Christological argument. Islamà argued that the revelation of its holy book, theà Quran, justifies its heavenly authorship, and thus the existence of God. The bible that is Holy book of Christians argued that there is one mighty and strong being in the universe, which declares the existence of God. (Dr. Andrew Corbett, 2009) Hindu arguments Most schools of Hinduism believe that there is existence of God but some of them dont believe that. Law of karma provide basis of the existence of God. They believe that the actions of karma are not performed by humans and one own self so there must be an existence of God to control and monitor all karmatic actions. They also believe that fruits of karma are transferred and dispensed through a body that is known as God and thus proved the existence. (Siyam, 2012) Arguments from testimony Arguments from testimony are based on experience of witnesses, possibly exemplifying the intentions of a specificà revealedà religion.à It is the fundamental of rationality that one should accept testimony except there are powerful motives for not doing so. Arguments against the existence of God Each of the following arguments aims at showing either that a particular subset of gods does not exist through contradictions in arguments or that there is insufficient reason to believe in them. Some arguments are discussed below that present the opposite and contradictory views relating existence of God. Empirical arguments Empirical arguments depend onà empirical dataà in order to prove their conclusions. The major arguments can be derived from the traditional and religiousà scriptures like the Jewishà Tanakh, theà Christianà Bible, theà Muslimà Quran,à Hinduà Vedas. The understanding of scripture provide basis to the knowledge of Gods existence. The theist arguments relating existence of God and its fundamentals are calledà theodicies. Theà argument from nonbelieversà contests the existence of an omnipotent God who wants humans to believe in him by arguing that such a god would do a better job of gathering believers. (Lawrence Croker, 2011) Deductive arguments Deductive arguments attempt to prove their conclusions byà deductive reasoningà from true premises. Theà Ultimate Boeing 747 gambità is a counter-argument to theà argument from design. The argument rests on the view that there is a designer that creates complex structures and design. So the God, we are talking about, should be as complicated as all things He has created in the universe. This situation also requires a designer. And its designer would also require a designer, ad infinitum. Therefore the views create infinite contradiction that there is a need of another designer to create a complex being. Theà omnipotence paradoxà recommends that the perception of anà omnipotentà being is rationally conflicting, for instance, for this purpose, questions like is GOD have all the authority? or can a mountain be created by God, so big that it cannot be moved by Himself. The Omniscience paradox demonstrates a different angle of the omnipotence paradox. Omnipotent and omniscience disagree with with concept of existence of God. Theà problem of hellà is the idea that everlasting damnation for actions committed in a finite existence contradicts Godsà omnibenevolenceà orà omnipresence. A contradictory argument against theà Cosmological argumentà i.e. chicken or egg is based on supposition that things cannot subsist without creators therefore should also apply to God creation and existence. This also lays foundation that existence of universe as a second cause. Theological noncognitivism also contradict the god-concept by showing that scientific test cannot verify it. This argument says that if God is morally perfect, omniscient and omnipotent, than instead of imperfect human beings, He would have created other morally perfect beings. (John Shook, 2011) Inductive arguments Inductive arguments predict existence of God based onà inductive reasoning. Theà atheist-existentialistà argument that it is impossible to present existence of a perfect sentient being. It also argued that ifà existence comes before spirit, ità follows fromà the connotation of the expressionà sentient that a sentient being cannot be inclusive or perfect. No reason argument attempts to reveal that an omniscient or omnipotent probably have no reason to do it in this way, especially the creation of universe, as it may likely to have no wants, needs, or desires etc. as these concepts are strictly relevant to human beings. so omnipotent god cannot exist until the universe exists. Since the universe exists, there is a contradiction, and therefore, an The other argument known as historical induction concludes that since most theistic religions all the way through narration and their gods ultimately come to be considered as fictitious or mistaken, all theistic religions, including contemporary ones, are therefore most likely untrue and incorrect by induction. (John Shook, 2011) Subjective arguments Similar to theà subjectiveà arguments for the existence of God are contradictory with the supernatural that chiefly based on the testimony or experience of witnesses, or the suggestions of aà revealedà religionà in common. The spectator argument provides trustworthiness to personal witnesses, contemporary and from the past, who disbelieve or strongly doubt the existence of God. The disappointment argument claims that if, when asked for, there is no visible help from God, there is any reason to believe that there is a God. (John Shook, 2011) Conclusions Conclusions on the existence of God can be categorized along abundant axes, producing a variety of vies about the existence and non existence of God.à Theismà and atheismà are positions of belief (or lack of it), whileà Gnosticismà andà agnosticismà are positions of knowledge (or the lack of it)à is concerns belief regarding Gods conceptual coherence.à Apatheismà concerns belief on the subject of the practical importance of whether God exists or not. The above discussion presents both views of the different philosophers and testimonies relating God existence. The views presented above are justified and contradicted based on different arguments and discussions based on several philosophical authors and religions therefore clearing the views of both sides that either God exist or not exist. The topic is still controversial and several philosophers are still arguing and practice their specific opinions relating this fact.

Designing With Feng Shui in Mind
Feng shui (pronounced fung shway) is a learned and intuitive art of understanding the energy of elements. The goal of this Chinese philosophy is harmony and balance, which some people have compared with the Western Classical ideals of symmetry and proportion. Feng is wind and shui is water. Danish architect Jà ¸rn Utzon combined these two forces of wind (feng) and water (shui) in his Australian masterpiece, the Sydney Opera House. Seen from this angle,à says Feng Shui Master Lam Kam Chuen, the whole structure has the quality of a craft with full sails: when the energy of the Wind and Water move together in certain directions, this ingenious structure draws that power to itself and to the city that surrounds it. Designers and decorators claim that they can feel the surrounding, universal energy called chi. But architects who incorporate the Eastern philosophy are not guided by intuition alone. The ancient art prescribes lengthy and complex rules that may strike modern homeowners as quirky. For example, your home should not be built at the end of a dead-end road. Round pillars are better than square. Ceilings should be high and well-lit. To further confuse the uninitiated, there are several different ways to practice feng shui: Use a compass or Lo-Pan to establish the most beneficial placement of roomsDraw on information from the Chinese horoscopeExamine the surrounding land forms, streets, streams and buildingsUse high-tech equipment to examine environmental health hazards, such as electromagnetic radiation and toxic materialsUse feng shui principles to help sell your houseUse some variation of a tool called the Ba-Gua -- an octagonal chart outlining the most favorable placement for roomsManipulate surrounding chi with appropriate colors or objects like a spherical sculpture Yet even the most baffling practices have a basis in common sense. For example, feng shui principles warn that a kitchen door should not face the stove. The reason? A person working at the stove may instinctively want to glance back at the door. This creates a feeling of unease, which can lead to accidents. Feng Shui and Architecture: Feng Shui teaches us how to create healthy harmonious environments, says Stanley Bartlett, who has used the centuries-old art to design homes and businesses. The ideas date back at least 3,000 years, yet a growing number of architects and decorators are integrating feng shui ideas with contemporary building design. For new construction, feng shui can be integrated into the design, but what about remodeling? The solution is the creative placement of objects, colors, and reflective materials. When the Trump International Hotel in New York City was remodeled in 1997, feng shui masters Pun-Yin and her father Tin-Sun installed a giant globe sculpture to divert the roundabout traffic energy from Columbus Circle away from the building. In fact, many architects and developers have enlisted the expertise of feng shui masters to add value to their properties. Everything in nature expresses its own energetic force, says Master Lam Kam Chuen. Recognizing this is essential to creating a living environment in which Yin and Yang are balanced. Despite the numerous complicated rules, feng shui adapts to many architectural styles. Indeed, the clean, uncluttered appearance may be your only clue that a home or office building was designed according to feng shui principles. Think of the shape of your house. If its square, a feng shui master may call it Earth, child of Fire and controller of Water. The shape itself expresses the supportive, secure, and stable quality of Earth, says Lam Kam Chuen. Warm tones of yellow and brown are ideal. Fire Shapes Master Lam Kam Chuen describes the famous triangular design of the Sydney Opera House in Australia as a Fire Shape. The irregular triangles of the Sydney Opera House lick the sky like flames, observes Maser Lam. Master Lam also calls St. Basils Cathedral in Moscow a Fire building, filled with an energy that could be as protective as your mother or as fierce as a mighty enemy. Another Fire structure is The Louvre Pyramid designed by Chinese-born architect I.M. Pei. It is a superb Fire structure, writes Master Lam, drawing down intense energy from the heavensââ¬âand making this site a prodigious attraction for visitors. It is perfectly balanced with the Water structure of the Louvre. Fire buildings are generally triangular in shape, like flames, while Water buildings are horizontal, like flowing water. Metal and Wood Shapes The architect shapes space with materials. Feng shui integrates and balances both shapes and materials. Round structures, like geodesic domes, have the energetic quality of Metal moving consistently and safely inwardââ¬âthe ideal design for shelters, according to Feng Shui Master Lam Kam Chuen. Rectangular buildings, like most skyscrapers, express growth, expansiveness, and power typical of Wood. Wood energy expands in all directions. In the vocabulary of feng shui, the word wood refers to the shape of the structure, not the building material. The tall, linearà Washington Monument may be described as a wood structure, with energy moving every which way.à Master Lam offers this assessment of the monument: Its spear-like power emanates in all direction, affecting the Capitol building of the Congress, the Supreme Court, and the White house. Like a mighty sword raised in the air, it is a constant, silent presence: those who live and work within its reach will often find themselves subject to internal disturbance and their ability to make decisions blocked. Earth Shapes and the Smudgers The American Southwest is an exciting juxtaposition of historic pueblo architecture and what many people consider tree-hugging modern ideas about ecology. A vibrant, local community of ecothinkersââ¬âpeople whose environmental thoughts direct their behaviorsââ¬âhave been associated with the area for decades. Frank Lloyd Wrights Experiment in Desert Living is perhaps the most famous example. It seems that this region has an unusual number of architects, builders, and designers committed to ecoversityââ¬âenergy-efficient, earth-friendly, organic, sustainable design. What we call Southwest Desert Design today is known to combine futuristic thinking with a profound respect for ancient Native American conceptsââ¬ânot only building materials, like adobe, but also feng shui-like Native American activities such as smudging being incorporated into everyday life. Bottom Line on Feng Shui: So, if you are stuck in your career or have trouble in your love life, the root of your problems may be in the design of your home and the misguided energy that surrounds you. Professional feng shui design suggestions can only help, say practitioners of this ancient Chinese philosophy. One way to get your life in balance is to get your architecture in balance. A Brief Note On The Sub Saharan Africa - 1819 Words
Crisis in Sub-Saharan Africa In todayââ¬â¢s world it seems as if people and society care more about how people dress and how they look ignoring whatââ¬â¢s around them. In reality, many countries are facing problems that seem to be out of their reach, and the countries simply cannot control nor fight the problem. One of many large global health issues is HIV/AIDs. Although the virus exists in many places all around the world, it is affecting and impacting poor, undeveloped countries the most, for example Sub-Saharan Africa. Sub-Saharan Africa is facing this epidemic in which many of its people are suffering from the virus HIV/AIDS. There are many methods in which a person can get infected. Homosexual relationships are not the only cause to blame for HIV/Aids in Africa. Heterosexual sexual relationships are als o a big factor. According to the article ââ¬Å"HIV and AIDS in Sub-Saharan Africa Regional Overviewâ⬠, 45 studies were done all across Sub-Saharan Africa. In which it was discovered that relationships among young women and older men are very common and linked with the practice of unprotected sex and very low condom use, which increases their risk of transmitting the disease (HIV and AIDS in Sub-Saharan Africa Regional Overview |AVERT). Although unprotected sex is very common all around the world, in Sub-Saharan Africa the rate of unprotected sex is much higher due to the lack of money and prevention methods given to the people. Since many parts of Sub-Saharan Africa are facing problems with poverty, it is not uncommon for poor, new urban migrants to become involved in the sex industry just to be able to get money to survive (Pulsipher et al, 317). As stated in the book, World Regional Geography, many people turn to the sex industry (mostly women) to get money in order to survive economically and in order to provide for their family. Sex workers are on the rise, and many of them are

My Personal Experience At The Bible - 875 Words
Last month, I challenged my readers, my friends, and my fellow Family Christian bloggers to spend 30 Days in the Word. The challenge ran from August 3rd-September 2nd. During that time participants pledged to read from the bible everyday (any book) and also to create one piece of bible journaling worship art each of the 4 weeks. Now that the 30 days have come to a close I wanted to share some of my artwork, and to ask you to share how spending time in daily communion with God and worshiping through bible journaling has effected you. My Personal Experience On August 1st, days before the bible journaling challenge began, I completed a 1 year bible reading plan. It marked the 1st time since I had surrendered my life to Christ that I had read the entire bible in a year. Over the past year God has expanded my view of His goodness and grace, challenged my thoughts and motives, and encouraged me to persevere in my journey towards becoming more like Christ. The reading portion of the challenge was intended to help others find the same burgeoning view of God and passion for hearing from Him. Did you already have a regular quiet time before you began the challenge? Do you notice a difference in your day or in your week when you have spent time reading the Bible? The second part of the challenge was the bible journaling itself. In it s purest form bible journaling is worship ââ¬â God s people lavishing our love, respect, honor, thanksgiving, and devotion on our Mighty God. string(53) " through the ceiling that this boy showed meâ⬠¦\." Chapter Sixteen The Silver Guillotine Lyra ducked her head at once under the shelter of her wolverine hood, and shuffled in through the double doors with the other children. Time enough later to worry about what sheââ¬â¢d say when they came face to face: she had another problem to deal with first, and that was how to hide her furs where she could get at them without asking permission. But luckily, there was such disorder inside, with the adults trying to hurry the children through so as to clear the way for the passengers from the zeppelin, that no one was watching very carefully. We will write a custom essay sample on The Golden Compass Chapter Sixteen or any similar topic only for you Order Now Lyra slipped out of the anorak, the leggings, and the boots and bundled them up as small as she could before shoving through the crowded corridors to her dormitory. Quickly she dragged a locker to the corner, stood on it, and pushed at the ceiling. The panel lifted, just as Roger had said, and into the space beyond she thrust the boots and leggings. As an afterthought, she took the alethiometer from her pouch and hid it in the inmost pocket of the anorak before shoving that through too. She jumped down, pushed back the locker, and whispered to Pantalaimon, ââ¬Å"We must just pretend to be stupid till she sees us, and then say we were kidnapped. And nothing about the gyptians or lorek Byrnison especially.â⬠Because Lyra now realized, if she hadnââ¬â¢t done so before, that all the fear in her nature was drawn to Mrs. Coulter as a compass needle is drawn to the Pole. All the other things sheââ¬â¢d seen, and even the hideous cruelty of the intercision, she could cope with; she was strong enough; but the thought of that sweet face and gentle voice, the image of that golden playful monkey, was enough to melt her stomach and make her pale and nauseated. But the gyptians were coming. Think of that. Think of lorek Byrnison. And donââ¬â¢t give yourself away, she said, and drifted back toward the canteen, from where a lot of noise was coming. Children were lining up to get hot drinks, some of them still in their coal-silk anoraks. Their talk was all of the zep-pelin and its passenger. ââ¬Å"It was her ââ¬â with the monkey daemon ââ¬â ââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"Did she get you, too?â⬠ââ¬Å"She said sheââ¬â¢d write to my mum and dad and I bet she neverâ⬠¦.â⬠ââ¬Å"She never told us about kids getting killed. She found Annie and the others, and sat down. ââ¬Å"Listen,â⬠she said, ââ¬Å"can you keep a secret?â⬠ââ¬Å"Yeah!â⬠The three faces turned to her, vivid with expectation. ââ¬Å"Thereââ¬â¢s a plan to escape,â⬠Lyra said quietly. ââ¬Å"Thereââ¬â¢s some people coming to take us away, right, and theyââ¬â¢ll be here in about a day. Maybe sooner. What we all got to do is be ready as soon as the signal goes and get our cold-weather clothes at once and run out. No waiting about. You just got to run. Only if you donââ¬â¢t get your anoraks and boots and stuff, youââ¬â¢ll die of cold.â⬠ââ¬Å"What signal?â⬠Annie demanded. ââ¬Å"The fire bell, like this afternoon. Itââ¬â¢s all organized. All the kidsââ¬â¢re going to know and none of the grownups. Especially not her.â⬠Their eyes were gleaming with hope and excitement. And all through the canteen the message was being passed around. Lyra could tell that the atmosphere had changed. Outside, the children had been energetic and eager for play; then when they had seen Mrs. Coulter they were bubbling with a suppressed hysterical fear; but now there was a control and purpose to their talkativeness. Lyra marveled at the effect hope could have. She watched through the open doorway, but carefully, ready to duck her head, because there were adult voices coming, and then Mrs. Coulter herself was briefly visible, looking in and smiling at the happy children, with their hot drinks and their cake, so warm and well fed. A little shiver ran almost instantaneously through the whole canteen, and every child was still and silent, staring at her. Mrs. Coulter smiled and passed on without a word. Little by little the talk started again. Lyra said, ââ¬Å"Where do they go to talk?â⬠ââ¬Å"Probably the conference room,â⬠said Annie. ââ¬Å"They took us there once,â⬠she added, meaning her and her dasmon. ââ¬Å"There was about twenty grownups there and one of ââ¬â¢em was giving a lecture and I had to stand there and do what he told me, like seeing how far my Kyrillion could go away from me, and then he hypnotized me and did some other thingsâ⬠¦.Itââ¬â¢s a big room with a lot of chairs and tables and a little platform. Itââ¬â¢s behind the front office. Hey, I bet theyââ¬â¢re going to pretend the fire drill went off all right. I bet theyââ¬â¢re scared of her, same as we areâ⬠¦.â⬠For the rest of the day, Lyra stayed close to the other girls, watching, saying little, remaining inconspicuous. There was exercise, there was sewing, there was supper, there was playtime in the lounge: a big shabby room with board games and a few tattered books and a table-tennis table. At some point Lyra and the others became aware that there was some kind of subdued emergency going on, because the adults were hurrying to and fro or standing in anxious groups talking urgently. Lyra guessed theyââ¬â¢d discovered the daemonsââ¬â¢ escape, and were wondering how it had happened. But she didnââ¬â¢t see Mrs. Coulter, which was a relief. When it was time for bed, she knew she had to let the other girls into her confidence. ââ¬Å"Listen,â⬠she said, ââ¬Å"do they ever come round and see if weââ¬â¢re asleep?â⬠ââ¬Å"They just look in once,â⬠said Bella. ââ¬Å"They just flash a lantern round, they donââ¬â¢t really look.â⬠ââ¬Å"Good. ââ¬ËCause Iââ¬â¢m going to go and look round. Thereââ¬â¢s a way through the ceiling that this boy showed meâ⬠¦. You read "The Golden Compass Chapter Sixteen" in category "Essay examples"â⬠She explained, and before sheââ¬â¢d even finished, Annie said, ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ll come with you!â⬠ââ¬Å"No, you better not, ââ¬â¢cause itââ¬â¢ll be easier if thereââ¬â¢s just one person missing. You can all say you fell asleep and you donââ¬â¢t know where Iââ¬â¢ve gone.â⬠ââ¬Å"But if I came with you ââ¬â ââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"More likely to get caught,â⬠said Lyra. Their two daemons were staring at each other, Pantalaimon as a wildcat, Annieââ¬â¢s Kyrillion as a fox. They were quivering. Pantalaimon uttered the lowest, softest hiss and bared his teeth, and Kyrillion turned aside and began to groom himself unconcernedly. ââ¬Å"All right then,â⬠said Annie, resigned. It was quite common for struggles between children to be settled by their daemons in this way, with one accepting the dominance of the other. Their humans accepted the outcome without resentment, on the whole, so Lyra knew that Annie would do as she asked. They all contributed items of clothing to bulk out Lyraââ¬â¢s bed and make it look as if she was still there, and swore to say they knew nothing about it. Then Lyra listened at the door to make sure no one was coming, jumped up on the locker, pushed up the panel, and hauled herself through. ââ¬Å"Just donââ¬â¢t say anything,â⬠she whispered down to the three faces watching. Then she dropped the panel gently back into place and looked around. She was crouching in a narrow metal channel supported in a framework of girders and struts. The panels of the ceilings were slightly translucent, so some light came up from below, and in the faint gleam Lyra could see this narrow space (only two feet or so in height) extending in all directions around her. It was crowded with metal ducts and pipes, and it would be easy to get lost in, but provided she kept to the metal and avoided putting any weight on the panels, and as long as she made no noise, she should be able to go from one end of the station to the other. ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s just like back in Jordan, Pan,â⬠she whispered, ââ¬Å"looking in the Retiring Room.â⬠ââ¬Å"If you hadnââ¬â¢t done that, none of this would have happened,â⬠he whispered back. ââ¬Å"Then itââ¬â¢s up to me to undo it, isnââ¬â¢t it?â⬠She got her bearings, working out approximately which direction the conference room was in, and then set off. It was a far from easy journey. She had to move on hands and knees, because the space was too low to crouch in, and every so often she had to squeeze under a big square duct or lift herself over some heating pipes. The metal channels she crawled in followed the tops of internal walls, as far as she could tell, and as long as she stayed in them she felt a comforting solidity below her; but they were very narrow, and had sharp edges, so sharp that she cut her knuckles and her knees on them, and before long she was sore all over, and cramped, and dusty. But she knew roughly where she was, and she could see the dark bulk of her furs crammed in above the dormitory to guide her back. She could tell where a room was empty because the panels were dark, and from time to time she heard voices from below, and stopped to listen, but it was only the cooks in the kitchen, or the nurses in what Lyra, in her Jordan way, thought of as their common room. They were saying nothing interesting, so she moved on. At last she came to the area where the conference room should be, according to her calculations; and sure enough, there was an area free of any pipework, where air conditioning and heating ducts led down at one end, and where all the panels in a wide rectangular space were lit evenly. She placed her ear to the panel, and heard a murmur of male adult voices, so she knew she had found the right place. She listened carefully, and then inched her way along till she was as close as she could get to the speakers. Then she lay full length in the metal channel and leaned her head sideways to hear as well as she could. There was the occasional clink of cutlery, or the sound of glass on glass as drink was poured, so they were having dinner as they talked. There were four voices, she thought, including Mrs. Coulterââ¬â¢s. The other three were men. They seemed to be discussing the escaped dasmons. ââ¬Å"But who is in charge of supervising that section?â⬠said Mrs. Coulterââ¬â¢s gentle musical voice. ââ¬Å"A research student called McKay,â⬠said one of the men. ââ¬Å"But there are automatic mechanisms to prevent this sort of thing happening ââ¬â ââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"They didnââ¬â¢t work,â⬠she said. ââ¬Å"With respect, they did, Mrs. Coulter. McKay assures us that he locked all the cages when he left the building at eleven hundred hours today. The outer door of course would not have been open in any case, because he entered and left by the inner door, as he normally did. Thereââ¬â¢s a code that has to be entered in the ordinator controlling the locks, and thereââ¬â¢s a record in its memory of his doing so. Unless thatââ¬â¢s done, an alarm goes off.â⬠ââ¬Å"But the alarm didnââ¬â¢t go off,â⬠she said. ââ¬Å"It did. Unfortunately, it rang when everyone was outside, taking part in the fire drill.â⬠ââ¬Å"But when you went back inside ââ¬â ââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"Unfortunately, both alarms are on the same circuit; thatââ¬â¢s a design fault that will have to be rectified. What it meant was that when the fire bell was turned off after the practice, the laboratory alarm was turned off as well. Even then it would still have been picked up, because of the normal checks that would have taken place after every disruption of routine; but by that time, Mrs. Coulter, you had arrived unexpectedly, and if you recall, you asked specifically to meet the laboratory staff there and then, in your room. Consequently, no one returned to the laboratory until some time later.â⬠ââ¬Å"I see,â⬠said Mrs. Coulter coldly. ââ¬Å"In that case, the daemons must have been released during the fire drill itself. And that widens the list of suspects to include every adult in the station. Had you considered that?â⬠ââ¬Å"Had you considered that it might have been done by a child?â⬠said someone else. She was silent, and the second man went on: ââ¬Å"Every adult had a task to do, and every task would have taken their full attention, and every task was done. There is no possibility that any of the staff here could have opened the door. None. So either someone came from outside altogether with the intention of doing that, or one of the children managed to find his way there, open the door and the cages, and return to the front of the main building.â⬠ââ¬Å"And what are you doing to investigate?â⬠she said. ââ¬Å"No; on second thought, donââ¬â¢t tell me. Please understand, Dr. Cooper, Iââ¬â¢m not criticizing out of malice. We have to be quite extraordinarily careful. It was an atrocious lapse to have allowed both alarms to be on the same circuit. That must be corrected at once. Possibly the Tartar officer in charge of the guard could help your investigation? I merely mention that as a possibility. Where were the Tartars during the fire drill, by the way? I suppose you have considered that?â⬠ââ¬Å"Yes, we have,â⬠said the man wearily. ââ¬Å"The guard was fully occupied on patrol, every man. They keep meticulous records.â⬠ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m sure youââ¬â¢re doing your very best,â⬠she said. ââ¬Å"Well, there we are. A great pity. But enough of that for now. Tell me about the new separator.â⬠Lyra felt a thrill of fear. There was only one thing this could mean. ââ¬Å"Ah,â⬠said the doctor, relieved to find the conversation turning to another subject, ââ¬Å"thereââ¬â¢s a real advance. With the first model we could never entirely overcome the risk of the patient dying of shock, but weââ¬â¢ve improved that no end.â⬠ââ¬Å"The Skraelings did it better by hand,â⬠said a man who hadnââ¬â¢t spoken yet. ââ¬Å"Centuries of practice,â⬠said the other man. ââ¬Å"But simply tearing was the only option for some time,â⬠said the main speaker, ââ¬Å"however distressing that was to the adult operators. If you remember, we had to discharge quite a number for reasons of stress-related anxiety. But the first big breakthrough was the use of anesthesia combined with the Maystadt anbaric scalpel. We were able to reduce death from operative shock to below five percent.â⬠ââ¬Å"And the new instrument?â⬠said Mrs. Coulter. Lyra was trembling. The blood was pounding in her ears, and Pantalaimon was pressing his ermine form against her side, and whispering, ââ¬Å"Hush, Lyra, they wonââ¬â¢t do it ââ¬â we wonââ¬â¢t let them do it ââ¬â ââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"Yes, it was a curious discovery by Lord Asriel himself that gave us the key to the new method. He discovered that an alloy of manganese and titanium has the property of insulating body from daemon. By the way, what is happening with Lord Asriel?â⬠ââ¬Å"Perhaps you havenââ¬â¢t heard,â⬠said Mrs. Coulter. ââ¬Å"Lord Asriel is under suspended sentence of death. One of the conditions of his exile in Svalbard was that he give up his philosophical work entirely. Unfortunately, he managed to obtain books and materials, and heââ¬â¢s pushed his heretical investigations to the point where itââ¬â¢s positively dangerous to let him live. At any rate, it seems that the Vatican Council has begun to debate the question of the sentence of death, and the probability is that itââ¬â¢ll be carried out. But your new instrument, Doctor. How does it work?â⬠ââ¬Å"Ah ââ¬â yes ââ¬â sentence of death, you say? Gracious Godâ⬠¦Iââ¬â¢m sorry. The new instrument. Weââ¬â¢re investigating what happens when the intercision is made with the patient in a conscious state, and of course that couldnââ¬â¢t be done with the Maystadt process. So weââ¬â¢ve developed a kind of guillotine, I suppose you could say. The blade is made of manganese and titanium alloy, and the child is placed in a compartment ââ¬â like a small cabin ââ¬â of alloy mesh, with the daemon in a similar compartment connecting with it. While there is a connection, of course, the link remains. Then the blade is brought down between them, severing the link at once. They are then separate entities.â⬠ââ¬Å"I should like to see it,â⬠she said. ââ¬Å"Soon, I hope. But Iââ¬â¢m tired now. I think Iââ¬â¢ll go to bed. I want to see all the children tomorrow. We shall find out who opened that door.â⬠There was the sound of chairs being pushed back, polite expressions, a door closing. Then Lyra heard the others sit down again, and go on talking, but more quietly. ââ¬Å"What is Lord Asriel up to?â⬠ââ¬Å"I think heââ¬â¢s got an entirely different idea of the nature of Dust. Thatââ¬â¢s the point. Itââ¬â¢s profoundly heretical, you see, and the Consistorial Court of Discipline canââ¬â¢t allow any other interpretation than the authorized one. And besides, he wants to experiment ââ¬â ââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"To experiment? With Dust?â⬠ââ¬Å"Hush! Not so loudâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ ââ¬Å"Do you think sheââ¬â¢ll make an unfavorable report?â⬠ââ¬Å"No, no. I think you dealt with her very well.â⬠ââ¬Å"Her attitude worries meâ⬠¦.â⬠ââ¬Å"Not philosophical, you mean?â⬠ââ¬Å"Exactly. A personal interest. I donââ¬â¢t like to use the word, but itââ¬â¢s almost ghoulish.â⬠ââ¬Å"Thatââ¬â¢s a bit strong.â⬠ââ¬Å"But do you remember the first experiments, when she was so keen to see thefn pulled apart ââ¬â ââ¬Å" Lyra, coutdnââ¬â¢t help it: a little cry escaped her, and at the same time she tensed and shivered, and her foot knocked against a stanchion. ââ¬Å"What was that?â⬠ââ¬Å"In the ceiling ââ¬â ââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"Quick!â⬠The sound of chairs being thrown aside, feet running, a table pulled across the floor. Lyra tried to scramble away, but there was so little space, and before she could move more than a few yards the ceiling panel beside her was thrust up suddenly, and she was looking into the startled face of a man. She was close enough to see every hair in his moustache. He was as startled as she was, but with more freedom to move, he was able to thrust a hand into the gap and seize her arm. ââ¬Å"A child!â⬠ââ¬Å"Donââ¬â¢t let her go ââ¬â ââ¬Å" Lyra sank her teeth into his large freckled hand. He cried out, but didnââ¬â¢t let go, even when she drew blood. Pan-talaimon was snarling and spitting, but it was no good, the man was much stronger than she was, and he pulled and pulled until her other hand, desperately clinging to the stanchion, had to loosen, and she half-fell through into the room. Still she didnââ¬â¢t utter a sound. She hooked her legs over the sharp edge of the metal above, and struggled upside down, scratching, biting, punching, spitting in passionate fury. The men were gasping and grunting with pain or exertion, but they pulled and pulled. And suddenly all the strength went out of her. It was as if an alien hand had reached right inside where no hand had a right to be, and wrenched at something deep and precious. She felt faint, dizzy, sick, disgusted, limp with shock. One of the men was holding Pantalaimon. He had seized Lyraââ¬â¢s daemon in his human hands, and poor Pan was shaking, nearly out of his mind with horror and disgust. His wildcat shape, his fur now dull with weakness, now sparking glints of anbaric alarmâ⬠¦He curved toward his Lyra as she reached with both hands for himâ⬠¦. They fell still. They were captured. She felt those handsâ⬠¦.It wasnââ¬â¢t allowedâ⬠¦.Not supposed to touchâ⬠¦ Wrongâ⬠¦. ââ¬Å"Was she on her own?â⬠A man was peering into the ceiling space. ââ¬Å"Seems to be on her ownâ⬠¦.â⬠ââ¬Å"Who is she?â⬠ââ¬Å"The new child.â⬠ââ¬Å"The one the Samoyed huntersâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ ââ¬Å"Yes.â⬠ââ¬Å"You donââ¬â¢t suppose sheâ⬠¦the daemonsâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ ââ¬Å"Could well be. But not on her own, surely?â⬠ââ¬Å"Should we tell ââ¬â ââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"I think that would put the seal on things, donââ¬â¢t you?â⬠ââ¬Å"I agree. Better she doesnââ¬â¢t hear at all.â⬠ââ¬Å"But what can we do about this?â⬠ââ¬Å"She canââ¬â¢t go back with the other children.â⬠ââ¬Å"Impossible!â⬠ââ¬Å"Thereââ¬â¢s only one thing we can do, it seems to me.â⬠ââ¬Å"Now?â⬠ââ¬Å"Have to. Canââ¬â¢t leave it till the morning. She wants to watch.â⬠ââ¬Å"We could do it ourselves. No need to involve anyone else.â⬠The man who seemed to be in charge, the man who wasnââ¬â¢t holding either Lyra or Pantalaimon, tapped his teeth with a thumbnail. His eyes were never still; they flicked and slid and darted this way and that. Finally he nodded. ââ¬Å"Now. Do it now,â⬠he said. ââ¬Å"Otherwise sheââ¬â¢ll talk. The shock will prevent that, at least. She wonââ¬â¢t remember who she is, what she saw, what she heardâ⬠¦.Come on.â⬠Lyra couldnââ¬â¢t speak. She could hardly breathe. She had to let herself be carried through the station, along white empty corridors, past rooms humming with anbaric power, past the dormitories where children slept with their dasmons on the pillow beside them, sharing their dreams; and every second of the way she watched Pantalaimon, and he reached for her, and their eyes never left each other. Then a door which opened by means of a large wheel; a hiss of air; and a brilliantly lit chamber with dazzling white tiles and stainless steel. The fear she felt was almost a physical pain; it was a physical pain, as they pulled her and Pantalaimon over toward a large cage of pale silver mesh, above which a great pale silver blade hung poised to separate them forever and ever. She found a voice at last, and screamed. The sound echoed loudly off the shiny surfaces, but the heavy door had hissed shut; she could scream and scream forever, and not a sound would escape. But Pantalaimon, in answer, had twisted free of those hateful hands ââ¬â he was a lion, an eagle; he tore at them with vicious talons, great wings beat wildly, and then he was a wolf, a bear, a polecat ââ¬â darting, snarling, slashing, a succession of transformations too quick to register, and all the time leaping, flying, dodging from one spot to another as their clumsy hands flailed and snatched at the empty air. But they had daemons too, of course. It wasnââ¬â¢t two against three, it was two against six. A badger, an owl, and a baboon were all just as intent to pin Pantalaimon down, and Lyra was crying to them: ââ¬Å"Why? Why are you doing this? Help us! You shouldnââ¬â¢t be helping them!â⬠And she kicked and bit more passionately than ever, until the man holding her gasped and let go for a moment ââ¬â and she was free, and Pantalaimon sprang toward her like a spark of lightning, and she clutched him to her fierce breast, and he dug his wildcat claws into her flesh, and every stab of pain was dear to her. ââ¬Å"Never! Never! Never!â⬠she cried, and backed against the wall to defend him to their death. But they fell on her again, three big brutal men, and she was only a child, shocked and terrified; and they tore Pantalaimon away, and threw her into one side of the cage of mesh and carried him, struggling still, around to the other. There was a mesh barrier between them, but he was still part of her, they were still joined. For a second or so more, he was still her own dear soul. Above the panting of the men, above her own sobs, above the high wild howl of her daemon, Lyra heard a humming sound, and saw one man (bleeding from the nose) operate a bank of switches. The other two looked up, and her eyes followed theirs. The great pale silver blade was rising slowly, catching the brilliant light. The last moment in her complete life was going to be the worst by far. ââ¬Å"What is going on here?â⬠A light, musical voice: her voice. Everything stopped. ââ¬Å"What are you doing? And who is this child ââ¬â ââ¬Å" She didnââ¬â¢t complete the word child, because in that instant she recognized Lyra. Through tear-blurred eyes Lyra saw her totter and clutch at a bench; her face, so beautiful and composed, grew in a moment haggard and horror-struck. ââ¬Å"Lyra ââ¬â â⬠she whispered. The golden monkey darted from her side in a flash, and tugged Pantalaimon out from the mesh cage as Lyra fell out herself. Pantalaimon pulled free of the monkeyââ¬â¢s solicitous paws and stumbled to Lyraââ¬â¢s arms. ââ¬Å"Never, never,â⬠she breathed into his fur, and he pressed his beating heart to hers. They clung together like survivors of a shipwreck, shivering on a desolate coast. Dimly she heard Mrs. Coulter speaking to the men, but she couldnââ¬â¢t even interpret her tone of voice. And then they were leaving that hateful room, and Mrs. Coulter was half-carrying, half-supporting her along a corridor, and then there was a door, a bedroom, scent in the air, soft light. Mrs. Coulter laid her gently on the bed. Lyraââ¬â¢s arm was so tight around Pantalaimon that she was trembling with the force of it. A tender hand stroked her head. ââ¬Å"My dear, dear child,â⬠said that sweet voice. ââ¬Å"However did you come to be here?â⬠How to cite The Golden Compass Chapter Sixteen, Essay examples
